sculpture !

Because i planned on making Tobi in a couple different ways and I've been wanting an excuse to play with clay for a while, I realised that this was a perfect opportunity to do both.

So before I make him, I wanted to give myself a rough idea of how I would even achieve this. At first I thought I would look at a different picture of him to model but then realised that it's best that everything is from the same photo. When I got to planning how I would make him out of clay, i initially thought that making different sections would be the best way. This idea quickly went in the bin (see failed attempt at his head on the right). I realised that it's a lot more difficult and time consuming this way purely because I would have to join so many little fiddly bits together (and I really didn't have the patience to do that at the time).

This realisation dawned upon me as soon as I tried to join everything together (I didn't take a picture, but trust me, it looked terrible) which consequently lead me to smooshing it all back into one slug like shape with a head. This was the base of the final Tobi sculpture. The only bits I added were the nose area, nose ball and eye, as well as all of that hair texture (which took a lot less time than I thought it would). Overall, after he was perfected and painted, I think the sculpture is quite good! I was trying to convey the personality he gave off in the photo and my initial illustrations as much as I could, and I'm pretty happy with the result.
